Malta has offered to co-sponsor an EU summit on irregular migration, Foreign Minister Tonio Borg told his Italian counterpart Franco Frattini in a letter
The summit has been proposed by Italy. Dr Borg said this problem should be treated by the most senior political authorities in the EU.
He said that a clear political direction was needed on the problem and this had to be given by the European Council.
